This large lunar rock was photographed, examined and sampled by astronaut Edgar D. Mitchell, during the second extravehicular activity (EVA), in an area northwest of the Lunar Module (LM). The sample removed came from a point almost bordering the "turtle" rock, but had not been taken until after this photo was taken. By comparison, the following frame shows the same boulder with the sample absent, which means that Mitchell removed the sample between photographing numbers AS14-68-9475 and AS14-68-9476. While astronauts Alan B. Shepard Jr., commander; and Mitchell, lunar module pilot, descended in the LM to explore the moon, astronaut Stuart A. Roosa, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) in lunar orbit.
