A young bald eagle perches on the side of the massive nest situated in a pine tree on State Road 3 that runs through Kennedy Space Center. The nest is one of 12 active nests throughout the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which shares a boundary with KSC. Young birds lack the typical white head, which they gain after several years. Their habitat is near lakes, rivers, marshes and seacoasts. Nests are masses of sticks usually in the top of a tall tree.
