NASA launched its most advanced unmanned spacecraft from Cape Kennedy at 2:35 pm EST atop an Atlas Agena Launch Vehicle. The Orbiting Astronomical Observatory is the first in a series of four designed to give astronomers their first sustained look into the Universe from above the obscuring and distorting effects of the Earth's atmosphere.
