Work crews saw down one of the first trees on May 17, 1963, signaling the beginning of construction of the Mississippi Test Facility in Hancock County, Miss. The tree was cut in Devil's Swamp near the site where the construction dock was built on the turn basin of the man-made canal system. The facility is now known as the NASA's Stennis Space Center.
